Born in 1981, one year after Zimbabwe’s emergence from white-ruled Rhodesia, Kudzanai Chiurai’s artistic practice focuses on some of the most pressing issues arising in a postcolonial society. Questions of displacement, identity-building, and structures of social and political inequality are incorporated in his artworks.
Chiurai uses various media, from video to painting to photography, putting the human being at the center. By building elaborate sceneries and narratives around the characters he creates, while also referring to archival materials, such as photographs, screenplays, and design, Chiurai blurs the lines between fact and fiction, aiming to reimagine the experience of a postcolonial metropolis. His series The Black President (2009) originated during a time of major political events: elections in both Zimbabwe and South Africa, and Barack Obama becoming the first black President of the United States. The series consists of portraits of an imaginary cabinet of ministers as well as the head of state, the Black President. Chiurai uses carefully constructed iconography to simultaneously represent and question masculinity and power.

Kudzanai Chiurai (nascido em 1981) é um artista e ativista zimbabuano. O seu repertório de arte combina o uso de mídia mista para abordar e lidar com questões sociais, políticas e culturais no Zimbábue.[1] Desde a sua primeira exposição individual em 2003, as suas obras de arte foram expostas no Museu de Arte Moderna de Nova York, no Museu de Arte Moderna de Frankfurt, no Museu Victoria and Albert de Londres e na Documenta de Kassel na Alemanha. Forbes listou-o entre "treze africanos a prestar atenção em 2013".[2]
Juventude e carreira
[editar | editar código-fonte]Chiurai nasceu em 1981 em Harare, a capital do Zimbábue, mas passou a maior parte dos seus últimos anos na África do Sul, onde se tornou o primeiro estudante negro a se formar com bacharelado em Belas Artes pela Universidade de Pretória.[3]
Ele começou a sua carreira pintando paisagens e retratos até deixar o seu país para a África do Sul, onde desenvolveu interesse em usar a arte como uma forma de ativismo.[4] Em 2004, Chiurai partiu em um exílio auto-imposto após receber ameaças de prisão após a exibição de Rau Rau e da Batalha do Zimbábue, duas controversas obras de arte que retrataram Robert Mugabe como uma figura demoníaca durante as eleições gerais de 2008 no Zimbábue.[
