In 2006, more than 13 years after the publication of the forum, and during the first week of her first-ever artist residency, filmmaker Lusztig learned she was pregnant. She was so overcome with nausea that she had to go home early. “The fact that my pregnancy literally coincided with the beginning and end of my artist residency career definitely made me panic about how I would be able to maintain my creative life as a new mom, and I think I’ve been reckoning and negotiating with those constraints ever since,” she confessed.
For Lusztig the experience of matrescence was a brutal awakening, and just the beginning of a never-ending struggle to find room for herself and her creative practice.
