Abdul Salam Zaeef
2000–2001 Afghan ambassador to Pakistan
MullahAbdul Salam Zaeef (; born 1967) is an Afghan affiliated with the Taliban political / militant organization and a former Afghan ambassador to Pakistan before the US invasion of Afghanistan.[2]
He was detained in Pakistan in the fall of 2001 and held until 2005 in the Guantanamo Bay detainment camp.[2] The United Nations removed Zaeef from its list of terrorists in July 2010.[3]
Early life
[edit]Zaeef was born in 1967 to a poor family in the small village of Zangiabad, between the Arghandab and Dori rivers, in the Panjwayi District of Kandahar Province in southern Afghanistan. His family had moved there a few years earlier, because of fighting over land in their home village of Jaldak in Zabul Province. His uncle, Mullah Nezam, was accused of killing 16 people in the fighting and was later killed by government forces. Zaeef's mother died when he was one or two years old. The family moved to Mushan, another village nearby, and then to Rangrezan in Maywand District. His father died in 1975. Mullah Abdul Salam Rocketi (born 1958) is a former mujahideenfreedom fighter and Taliban military commander who renounced his allegiance to run for the Parliament of Afghanistan in 2005, and for the Presidency in 2009.[1] The Asia Times described him as one of the former Taliban who "... act as the Taliban's political wing in Kabul."[2] Rocketi is an ethnic Pashtun from Zabul Province in Afghanistan. Son of Haji Manzar, he had almost completed his religious studies before he joined the mujahedeen (freedom fighter) war against the foreign invaders.
Soviet invasion of Afghanistan
[edit]Rocketi was born in Naw Bahar District, Zabul Province. During the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan in the 1980s, Rocketi earned his surname (Rocketi - راکیټی) fighting with rocket-propelled grenades against Soviet helicopters and tanks, and he was soon elected as the main commander in the south zone of Afghanistan in the war against Russian invaders, he was titled Rocketi by his acting commander at that time Amir Mussa kalim the acting commander of Mujahedeen.[3]
