Supergrass From Oxford scamps to Britpoppers extroadinare, it's the Supergrass timeline in 5 easy stages.
Capacity cows The origins of one of the most decorated bands of the Britpop era are auspicious to say the least. Danny Goffey had emerged from his band the Fallopian Tubes to form the Jennifers with fellow pupil Gaz Coombes in The band Coombes described as "just plain sh*t" morphed into Theodore Supergrass however, when Coombes chanced upon fellow pupil and bassist Mick Quinn in a Harvester (So something good has came out of a Harvester). Danny, Gaz and Mick dropped the Theodore shortly after and embarked on their first live shows to a herd of cows next to Mick's house.
Alright! As receptive as the cows were, they weren't going to get the band any record deals, but that was ok because a gig at the Jericho Tavern in was replete with a veritable herd of slavering record company A&Rs, and after wowing the bovine hordes, Supergrass signed to Oxford label Backbeat. Their debut 'Caught By The Fuzz' hit shelves in summer , and thanks to John Peel, sold all of it's copies immediately. Gaz's tale of teenage arrest and cannabis possession was then re-released in October when the band signed to Parlophone, and was instantly hailed by both NME and Melody Maker.

Superpop
Ever since their first single made him dance spastically around the CD player, Supergrass have done it for EVERETT TRUE
I first heard Supergrass way back then. In the offices of Melody Maker, sorting through records for that week's singles column, someone pressed a copy of Caught By the Fuzz into my sweaty palms. It didn't impress me immediately - well it did, but only in a very throwaway sense. Blur, I thought. Blur done by a bunch of Oxford lads with way too much enthusiasm and disregard for convention. Play it 11 times, lose it down the back of the sofa, rediscover it in five years and think: "What the hell is this?", put it back on, dance spastically around the CD player in unadulterated joy at such happenstance, then promptly forget about it all over again. It was so brilliantly of its time that it somehow seemed contrived. I made it Single of the Week anyway. Such infectious joyfulness, such free spirit and youthful exuberance should always be encouraged, especially tales of teenage drug excursions gone wrong. The boys done gone got busted. "Here come my mum," the one with the ridiculous, wiggy sideburns yelled, "She knows what I've done." "Yeah, I know we were seen as Britpop's boy band," Mick Quinn (bass) tells me on the phone.
