Bought from a private collection by the present owner.
These artworks come from the descendants of the Maharaja of Santosh, a former princely state in what is now Bangladesh. The family has connection with R. Tagore as the owner's great uncle (Sri Promothonath Ray Chowdhury) was an eminent Bengali writer. The owners grandfather was knighted in 1930 and bestowed the title of Maharaja in 1936 and The Times reported his death in 1939. He became the first elected president of the Bengal Legislative Council. The owners father too, Maharajkumar Robin Roy had actively encouraged and promoted Bengal artists in his life time and he had collected works by these artists among others whose works subsequently were highly sought after by the international art collectors.
Gaganendranath Tagore was an Indian painter of the Bengal school. Along with his brother Abanindranath Tagore, they founded the Indian Society of Oriental Art. he was counted as one of the earliest modern artists in India. Gaganendranath was a uncle of the poet Rabindranath Tagore and had contributed his illustrations

Abanindranath was Rabindranath’s nephew and an artist and writer of children’s books. Abanindranath was born at Jorasanko in Kolkata on 7 August 1871 to his father Gunendranath Tagore. He went to Normal School from 1876, then went on to Sanskrit College until 1889. In this year, he married Suhasini Devi (daughter of Bhujagendra Bhusan Chatterjee, a descendant of Prasanna Coomar Tagore).
Abanindranath continued his education for another year and a half to study English at St. Xavier’s College. Yet Abanindranath’s chief interest was painting. In 1890, Abanindranath attended the Calcutta School of Art where he learnt from the Italian artist O. Ghilardi how to use pastels, and took classes in oil paintings from Charles Palmer but particularly developed an interest in watercolour. He began to publish his works in the early 1890s in magazines and Rabindranath’s books.
Abanindranath was Rabindranath’s cousin once removed. He was an artist and writer of children’s books. He first published his works in Rabindranath’s books. Initially, Abanindranath painted in a Western style but then turned to Indian styles. He worked together with E.B. Havell and his brother Gaganendranath to revitalize the teaching of India
