Backroad Anthem keeps driving after singer's death

About two weeks before Christmas, Backroad Anthem singers Toby Freeman and Craig Strickland made their final songwriting trip of the year to Nashville. Their Arkansas-based country band typically spent a week or more each month working in Music City, inching closer to the dream of a record deal.

On this trip, the men wrote songs with their producer Jody Stevens and hit songwriter Bart Butler. They were supposed to meet with fellow country singer/songwriter Jaren Johnston, but the appointment fell through and they started the eight-hour drive back to Fayetteville, Ark., near the Oklahoma border.

The trip was the last work engagement the band had for the year — and the last drive the men would make to Nashville. The day after Christmas, Strickland, 29, went duck hunting with year-old friend Chase Morland on Kaw Lake in Oklahoma. Morland tweeted before the trip: “In case we don’t come back, @BackroadCRAIG and I are going right through Winter Storm Goliath to kill ducks in Oklahoma.”

They didn’t come back. Their simple flat-bottomed John boat capsized sometime on Dec. 26 or 27 in the lake that was pummeled with strong wind gusts and high water levels. Morland’s body was found Dec. 28, and Strickland's remains were located

Just a day after country singer Craig Strickland was discovered dead, his former bandmates are debuting heartwarming footage of the singer in his final music video with the group. 

For more than three minutes, fans get their last glimpse of the Backroad Anthem singer in the group's newest music video for their song "Torn" shared on Facebook on Tuesday night. The handsome musician is unmissable throughout the sequence, sporting a red shirt as he grins and grooves with his pals. 

"Last year we shot a music video for our song, Torn," the group posted on Facebook. "We wanted to finally release the video and share with everyone so you could have a chance to see Craig doing what he loved. We are so proud of how it turned out, and we know Craig was too."
