Eric Michael Hilton, retired vice chairman of Hilton Hotels Corporation, died of natural causes in his home in Las Vegas on 10 December 2016. He was 83.
Born in El Paso, Texas in 1933, Eric Hilton was raised by his mother, Mary Barron Hilton. During high school, he excelled as a left-handed pitcher and was offered a contract to play for a minor league baseball team in Bisbee-Douglas, Arizona.
Instead, Eric worked summers at the El Paso Hilton and, after two years at Texas Western, was accepted to the School of Hotel Administration, Cornell University. However, the day after he got his acceptance letter, he received his draft notice despite the Korean War winding down. He joined the Army and served as a radar specialist in the United States and Japan.
After being discharged, in 1956, he climbed the career ladder in his family's business, from the bottom all the way to the C-suite.
Hilton's career was also distinguished by his long service to the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation. He was instrumental in the establishment of the Conrad N. Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management at the University of Houston in 1969. Early life
[edit]Eric Hilton was born on July 1, 1933, in Dallas, Texas, the third son of Conrad Hilton, founder of the Hilton Hotels Corporation, and Mary Adelaide Hilton (née Barron).[1][2][3]
Growing up in El Paso, Texas, Hilton was educated at El Paso High School and graduated from Texas Western College.[3] He served as a radar specialist in the Army in the Korean War.[3]
Career
[edit]Hilton started his career at the Hilton Hotels Corporation, in 1949.[1] He first worked at the El Paso Hilton, working his way up from "bellman, doorman, steward, cook, elevator operator, desk clerk and telephone operator."[3] Within a decade, in 1959, he became the manager of the Deshler Hilton in Columbus, Ohio.[3] Two years later, in 1961, he became the manager of the Shamrock Hilton in Houston, Texas.[3] He later served as the corporation's executive vice president.[2] He also served on its board of directors.[2] He served as its vice chairman from 1993 to 1997, when he reti
